What is a typical class session like?

A typical class session may start out with a fine motor activity to settle the group into a light, quiet mode:  hunt for buried treasures embedded in the bowl of dried peas, lentils and popcorn, or play the fishing game.   Every time the children come, we either make a special project or practice an important skill with a fun element involved. Then we practice our letter formations in our workbook, making sure we "bump" or touch the lines just right. The pre-writers will work on building strong foundation skills for writing:  pinching, squeezing with our hands, learning left from right, building letters with the wooden pieces.  The print and cursive students will improve letter formation, letter to line placement, size consistency and overall quality of their work. We know we're making progress and it feels good. There's only a few minutes left to practice a little more in our workbook before we pick out a prize from the prize box. We gather up our special tools, workbook, folder, project and prize.  Sandy, the instructor, will chat briefly with parents, and then it's time to go home

What sort of improvements might I see in my child's writing?

It depends on your child's current skills, naturally. At HandRIGHTing, Ink., we screen the child's foundations skills to target the areas that need improvement. Then we help each child learn new skills to build effective handwriting habits. These improvements might include: a more effective pencil grip, better posture for handwriting, more consistent use of the "helping hand" to hold down the paper when writing, improved legibility and greater fluency or speed of writing. Now we have, more importantly, greater confidence in tackling schoolwork and homework.  Your child is generating much more self esteem.

Are these classes just for kids with serious learning disabilities?

No. In fact, we target the "well-population". Most children in a classroom can figure out how to correctly print or write in cursive when the teachers hand out the handwriting assignments. There are, however, 2 or 3 in each classroom who may have difficulty with aspects of fine motor coordination, visually forming the letters with correct orientation, staying between the lines, or even having the endurance to complete homework in a timely manner. We understand the specific needs of children for handwriting success and are able to teach them with a fun and positive approach.

How long does the average child take these classes?

The average child requires 2 six-week sessions to build handwriting skills into a habit. The first 6 weeks normally focuses on improving the foundation skills while developing all of the skills for "legibility". The second 6 weeks focuses on improving speed or fluency. During this time a child will practice writing more sentences (if appropriate for his grade), copying from a book or the board, taking dictation, working on creative writing or making a poster. A percentage of our students require longer time to master their skills and continue to come throughout their school year. Some children continue intervention on a maintenance basis to reinforce good habits.

Is this really for adults, too?

Yes. You would be surprised at the number of adults who tell me that their handwriting is "terrible". We have received inquiries for adult handwriting from a variety of people, from those in sales, medicine, going back to school, insurance, and other service industries. At HandRIGHTing, Ink., we offer adult, group handwriting courses or private sessions at our studio and corporate, on-site courses. We help adults build the same kind of good skills and habits that we build with our younger clients. The materials are geared to adults, the language is geared to adults and adults learn more quickly.  The classes are not boring and adults gain important insights into their own handwriting concerns.

Might insurance cover this?

It might cover this. It depends on your plan. Since we do not directly bill insurance companies, you will need to pay us the amount up front. Prior to starting our services you should call your insurance company and tell them that you are seeking reimbursement for occupational therapy for fine-motor incoordination. We will be out-of-network. They usually will want to pre-approve these services first. We will be glad to provide you with an invoice to present to the insurance company. However, we do not guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse you the full amount.
